  • Oral presentations 20%
  • Midterm paper 20%
  • Final exam 25%
  • Class participation 10%

Exams:

Both the mid-term and the final will be take-home exams consisting of a series of questions designed to prompt students to respond with thorough essay answers. Equivalent of several short papers, these exams will demonstrate a student's grasp of the basic concepts introduced in the course, one's ability to read and to analyze creatively a work of literary art, and one's competency in the Spanish language. Exams are expected to be turned in as typed documents with correct grammar and vocabulary.

Oral presentations:

The oral presentations will be 15 minutes in length. The first oral presentation will be a formal reading of a Lorca poem, followed by an analysis of the poem's versification, its poetic devices and its meaning. Topics for the second oral presentation should be selected in consultation with the professor and will address some creative aspect of the works under discussion in class. Student presentations should be structured so as to serve as the basis for class discussion.

Midterm paper:

Students will write a 6-8 page paper on one of the authors, movements, works discussed in class. Students are encouraged to use their oral presentations as a point of departure for the paper, but this is not a requirement. Papers will be turned in double-spaced, with a title page and relevant bibliography (if research-based).

Class participation:

Students will be expected to contribute fully to the classroom discussion. To receive a high mark in class participation, it will not be enough to attend the classes (note that more than two absences in the semester will adversely affect the grade). Students must speak up in class and be willing to share their opinions and questions with the rest of the class.

Note: Students are encouraged to use the Oldenborg language tutors to answer specific questions relative to grammar. But under no circumstances is a tutor, an advanced student or a native speaker to review, revise or correct student papers. Evidence of such unauthorized help will result in an investigation for academic dishonesty. Peer-editing within the class is allowed and encouraged. Finally, anylibrary or on-line research for an oral presentation, paper or exam must be noted. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism.

In short, always note sources for idea sother than your own and don't be afraid to make mistakes in Spanish.
