Fulbright Program Fellowships
Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase
mutual understanding between peoples of the United States
and other countries, through the exchange of persons,
knowledge and skills. Students must apply through the
Fulbright Program Advisors (FPA) on campus. Deadline for
submission is October 20 of each year for fellowships
beginning in the fall of the following year.
Among the types of grants available for both French and
Spanish speakers are the Fulbright Full Grants, the
Fulbright Business Grants (for International MBA Grants to
Spain), and the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships.

Rotary Educational Programs (Ambassadorial Scholarships)
Established in 1947, this program awards approximately 800
privately funded scholarships to graduating college seniors
to travel to more than 70 nations worldwide for the purpose
of furthering international understanding and friendly
relations among people of different countries. Interested
applicants apply through their local Rotary Club, and
deadlines and specific information is available through the
local club level. Deadlines can be as early as March 1 for a
scholarship beginning in the following year.

The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship
The Watson is a one-year grant for independent study and
travel outside the United States awarded competitively to
graduating college seniors nominated by participating
institutions. Approximately 50 awards are given out each
year, based on projects that demonstrate creativity,
feasibility, and personal significance. Applicants apply for
nomination by Pomona College in the fall (by November)
followed up with an individual interview with a member of
the Fellowship program’s selection committee. National
fellowship winners are announced in the spring.

European Union Center Summer Internship
Program
The European Union Center of California accepts applications
each spring for its summer internship program at the
Assembly of European Regions (AER) in Strasbourg, France.
The AER is the primary political lobbying organization for
the regions of Europe, serving over 250 member-regions in 26
countries. Interns spend 6-8 weeks during July and August
learning about and observing the European political process,
drafting political declarations, translating letters and
managing conferences. The intern must by able to communicate
in basic French. Some competency in Spanish is also
preferred. The intern will be awarded a $3000 stipend to
cover travel and living expenses. Application deadline:

Peace Corps
Peace Corps volunteers serve their country in the cause of
peace by living and working in developing countries, helping
countless individuals who want to build a better life for
themselves, their children and their communities. Liberal
arts graduates with skills in Spanish and French are needed
for programs in education, health, business and
micro-enterprise development, environmental education,
agro-forestry and sustainable agriculture. Applications are
received on an on-going basis, followed by interviews.

Oldenborg Center Research and Travel Grants. (up to $3,500)
The Pomona College Oldenborg Center offers financial support
to help cover expenses for senior theses, projects and
exhibitions that demonstrate an international research
component. Applications are accepted in both the fall and
spring semesters. For complete information on amounts,

For speakers of French
Rosen French Travel Grant ($1,500)
This Grant, administered through the RLL French Section,
allows French majors the opportunity to research abroad for
their senior projects and theses. Applicants must be
majoring in French or Romance Literatures, have junior
standing, have an overall GPA of 9,5 or above, and must have
completed five semesters of college-level French or the
equivalent. Applicants submit to the French Section
coordinator a one-page statement of purpose explaining the
project or research (what, why, where and when) and include
name, phone number, e-mail address, campus address and times
available for an interview in French. Submissions are due by
the fourth Friday in April.
For speakers of Spanish
The Pomona College Iberian Grant
Each year one sophomore or junior Pomona College student is
selected, on the basis of competitive grant applications, to
receive $3,500 to travel to the Iberian Peninsula
(Spain/Portugal) to carry out an independent research
project. The academic area of the research project is open,
but the Grant does not generally involve enrolling in a
program of academic instruction. Grant winners are expected
to give an informal presentation of their experiences to
the Pomona college community upon their return and
participate in the evaluation of the next year's
applicants.
Grants are submitted in March of the academic year, usually
the first Friday after the spring break, and travel should
be carried out during May through August. For more

Language and Culture Assistant Program (Teaching
Assistantships in Spain)

The Embassy of Spain has a cooperative education program in
which students enrolled in their final year of the BA or BS
may apply for grants to work as teacher assistants in
elementary and secondary schools in Spain during the
academic year. Applications are generally due in May. More
