French Curriculum
The French curriculum consists of a sequence of courses designed to train students in the nuances of the French language and to expose them to the finest cultural achievements in the Francophone world. Language courses focus on the crucial areas of grammar, vocabulary and composition, even as they introduce students to contemporary cultural issues. Transitional Courses introduce students to sophisticated literary texts and products of contemporary culture as a continuation toward linguistic mastery. A wide range of upper division thematic and genre courses offer students unique opportunities to gain knowledge in both the breadth and depth of literature and culture in the French-speaking world.

Announcements & Activities

 Placement
Any entering student who has previously studied and plans to take French must take the appropriate placement examination. This includes students who have received Advanced Placement credit in the language. French Placement Exam is on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 8:00am in Hahn 101.

Limitation on Enrollment
So far as is practicable, enrollment in French may be limited. Courses numbered 1, 2, 22, and 33 should not exceed 18 students per section; courses numbered 44, 101, and 105 are limited to 15 students per section.

Oldenborg Center
All students may apply to live in the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations, a coeducational residence hall on the Pomona College campus. The Spanish Residence section provides daily opportunities to practice and improve language skills. The only formal requirement for living in Oldenborg is one semester's study of a foreign language at the college level, or the equivalent. Conversation classes are available in Oldenborg, taught be native-speaker residents who live in the residence  hall and organize activities for the French Section. Oldenborg Center also hosts language tables for students and faculty and native speakers of the language. Any student of The Claremont Colleges is welcome to attend the language tables. Further information about the Oldenborg program is available from the director.

Preparation for Graduate Study
Students who plan to continue on to graduate school majoring in Romance Languages or Romance Literatures are reminded that mastery of a second modern language is usually required.
