Spanish Curriculum
There are nearly 400 million Spanish-speakers in the U.S., Latin America, Europe and beyond, making it the world's third most-spoken language, according to Wikipedia. majoring in Spanish opens up a world of dynamic career possibilities as well as cultural experiences.

Pomona students have the opportunity to study with distinguished faculty members from the time they enter the College as freshmen; all faculty members in Romance Languages teach both lower-division language classes and literature classes. Enrollment in language classes is limited, ensuring that all students participate actively in class discussions. Courses range from Latin American Film to Chicano Movement Literature to Tropicalizations: Transcultural Representations of Latinidad.

Spanish Placement Examination
Any student who has previously studied Spanish and plans to take a course in the language must take the on-line Spanish Placement Exam. This includes students who have received Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credit in the language. Scores on the placement exam cannot be used to fulfill the College’s language requirement. The Spanish Placement Exam is available online at http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org. Use the pull-down menu feature to select Pomona College. The password is "sagehens1" (ending with the digit 1). Follow the online instructions for the exam. This exam must be taken before you leave on your Orientation Adventure on August 26, 2008.

Oldenborg Center
All students may apply to live in the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations, a coeducational residence hall on the Pomona College campus. The Spanish Residence section provides daily opportunities to practice and improve language skills. The only formal requirement for living in Oldenborg is one semester’s study of a foreign language at the college level, or equivalent. Conversation classes are available in Oldenborg, taught by native-speaker residents who live in the residence hall and organize activities for the Spanish Section. The Center also hosts language tables for students and faculty and native speakers of the language. Any student of The Claremont Colleges is welcome to attend the language tables. Further information about the Oldenborg program is available from the director.

Limitation on Course Enrollment
So far as practicable, enrollment in romance languages may be limited. Courses numbered 1, 2, 22 and 33 should not exceed 18 students per section; courses numbered 44, 100, 101 and 105 are limited to 15 students per section.

Preparation for Graduate Study
Students who plan to continue on to graduate school majoring in Romance Languages or romance Literatures are reminded that mastery of a second modern language is usually required.
